At its core, biochar is a natural material made by heating organic waste, such as wood or plant matter, in a low-oxygen environment. This process doesn’t just create a useful product—it changes the way carbon behaves.
Locking Carbon Away
When plants grow, they absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere. Normally, when those plants decay or are burned, that carbon is released back into the air.
Biochar interrupts that cycle.
Instead of returning to the atmosphere, the carbon is captured and stored in a stable, solid form. When biochar is added to soil, that carbon can remain locked away for years—often decades or longer—helping to reduce the overall amount of CO₂ in the atmosphere.
